Hours:      Full Time – 48/96 shift 
Tentative Start Date:      October 21, 2024
Salary Range:      $135,000 - $150,000

Must be detailed oriented, organized, highly skilled, experienced, and can function well in a lower call volume system that will spend as much time doing administrative duties as fire ground operations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This summary is established by the Platteville-Gilcrest Fire Protection District (PGFPD) to outline the basic requirements, duties and general responsibilities of the position of Battalion Chief.

This position is full time and FLSA exempt. This position is “At Will”, which means that in the absence of a contract, neither an employer nor an employee is required to give notice or advance notice of termination or resignation. Additionally, neither an employer nor an employee is required to give a reason for the separation from employment. PGFPD may terminate the employment relationship at any time and for no reason, subject to the requirements of applicable laws. Similarly, the employee may terminate the employment relationship at any time and for no reason, without prior notice.

The Battalion Chief directs, manages, supervises, evaluates, organizes and provides technical staff assistance to the operations of the fire district, including commanding crew personnel in fire suppression, emergency medical and rescue operations, manages and directs training activities, annual fire prevention inspections, and participates with fire prevention bureau personnel in fire investigations as necessary. Secures and assigns adequate resources to meet District staffing needs and response configurations for the performance of District operations on a continual basis. The Battalion Chief exercises independent judgment during complex situations without direct supervision. Performs all technical and administrative functions related to fire protection, suppression and emergency medical services, including responding to emergency and non-emergency situations.

The Battalion Chief exercises supervision over the Fire Lieutenants and indirectly over the Engineers, Firefighters and Paramedics. Receives direct supervision from the Operations Chief and general direction from the Fire Chief.
 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Must pass a drug screen and criminal/driving history background check
  • Have the ability to learn and teach a variety of firefighting duties and methods
  • Must be able to provide direction and give commands as appropriate
  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Must have appropriate oral and written communication skills and have skills and ability to work as an integral part of the team
  • Must have knowledge of surrounding resources, auto and mutual aid agreements, and the ability to manage multi-agency incidents
  • Have a working knowledge of fire apparatus and equipment to include the operation, care and light maintenance
  • Have the ability to plan, assist, direct, supervise, and review the operations of
    equipment and staffing at the scene of an incident
  • Have thorough knowledge of the Incident Command System and appropriate safety
    practices

Applicants not residing in Colorado must submit for reciprocity of required certifications for the position of Battalion Chief with the DFPC. Certifications must be either Pro Board, IFSAC or both to be eligible for reciprocity within the State of Colorado. PGFPD can provide a form to the candidate once they are given a job offer. The DFPC will then review their certificates to ensure they are valid. Once they are determined valid, the DFPC will then issue the individual a Temporary, Non-Accredited, state certification that is valid for 3 years enabling the individual to complete the practical process for each certification being considered for reciprocity. It is the expectation of PGFPD that all candidates hold valid accredited certifications at the completion of the 3 year grace period. No exceptions will be granted.

Certificates, Education, Licenses:
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess:
    • Colorado State Fire Officer II or equivalent out of state certification
    • Colorado State EMT-B certification (within 1 month of hire if out of state)
    • Valid Colorado driver’s license (within 6 months of hire if out of state)
    • Must obtain National Registry EMT certification within 18 months of hire
  • Must have an Associate Degree. A Bachelor’s degree is required by 2030
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Must have a minimum of five years of experience as a firefighter or in a related field (i.e., emergency services)
  • Must possess S-130, S-190
  • Must possess NIMS: ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800
  • Must complete PGFPD Battalion Chief Professional Development Qualification Program within 18 months of hire
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to perform all essential job tasks as defined in job description Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, crawl, twist, climb and lift 150 lbs. Exposure to cold, heat, extreme noise, outdoors confining workspace, electrical hazards, vibration, chemicals, dust, toxic waste, mechanical hazards, and explosive materials. Meet and pass the minimum annual fitness level requirement determined by PGFPD.
